Silver Mirror’s Pro Skincare Regimens – De Anna
Everyday, we have a steady stream of guests from skincare veterans to skincare newbies asking our team members the same thing: what do you use on your skin?
This is a blog series dedicated to that simple, yet very complex question.
Silver Mirror Skincare Pro: De Anna
Every skin care regimen has a specific focal point. Some people are trying to lift pigmentation and every step of their regimen is focused on aiding the completion of that goal. For others, it’s stimulating the skin to minimize the appearance of age or controlling congestion and acneic breakouts.
My primary area of interest is managing inflammation. You think wrinkles are the enemy? Nope. It’s inflammation that’s at the root of those wrinkles forming in the first place. In fact, ALL disease in the body essentially boils down to inflammation of the tissues. And it’s a key factor in the aging of the skin. In other words, inflammation is a fire that must be put out. Or somebody is going to get burned (i.e. you).
New York in particular is a hotbed of inflammation. We walk everywhere (think LOADS of UV exposure), our streets are clogged with traffic (the particles in exhaust fumes are like little skin cell stranglers) and the New York work ethic has us sleep-deprived, dehydrated and nutrient depleted. And all of that causes inflammation in the skin. It’s a recipe for disaster. And by disaster I mean hearing someone at a party say, “She looks great for someone in their 40s!” Except you’re 32. DISASTER.
The key to hitting these mean streets with that “inner glow” is reducing inflammation. That means a broad-spectrum SPF EVERY DAY OF THE YEAR, an effective antioxidant and a thorough but gentle cleanse.
Here’s how I’m currently winning the battle against inflammation:
My morning routine is focused on gently preparing my skin for the onslaught of the city.
Cleanse: I use Dermalogica’s PreCleanse to give a very gentle cleanse for the skin
Hydrate: 3 drops of SkinCeuticals Hydrating B5 Gel keeps the water content of my skin in balance all day
Antioxidant: Skinceuticals CE Ferulic. I call this my P-Block (as in “pollution block”). I DO NOT leave the house without an antioxidant and this guy is the king of antioxidants. There’s a reason they have a patent on this formulation. It’s UH-mazing.
Moisturizer: Dermalogica Skin Smoothing Cream I think of a moisturizer as a protectant and a slight replacement of lipids. I don’t personally believe in spending a lot of money on one.
SPF: Sanitas Solar Block. If I was banished to a deserted island and was only allowed to take 3 possessions, this would be one of them. It’s a whopping 15% zinc but it doesn’t “ghost” on the skin and absorbs to a lovely finish. Zinc is an awesome physical sunscreen and blocks the longest UVA ray, which is good news. Those long UVA rays are the guys that penetrate to the dermis and damage the DNA of the cells. Big no-no.
Nighttime is when I get crazy. I make sure I get ALL the gunk off my skin so it can properly breathe and repair while I’m asleep.
Double Cleanse: Yup. I do a double cleanse. Most people groan at the thought of adding an extra step to their regimen. But when you see the results you will become hooked. Don’t believe me? Maybe this will convince you: the night after my C-section when I still didn’t have use of my legs, I had a nurse bring me a basin of water and did my double cleanse in my hospital bed whilst hooked up to my IV. ‘Nuff said.
Dermalogica PreCleanse oil followed by Sanitas Vitamin C Lactic Cleanser
Exfoliation: About once every 10 days I use a 30% lactic acid solution to resurface my skin. Lactic acid is a big, fat molecule, so it’s pretty gentle on the skin. And it’s an awesome hydrator as well. It’s a win-win.
Twice a week I use Skinceuticals .5% retinol. This stuff is strong. My skin can’t take more than that. But the benefits are HUGE.
Antioxidant: Skinceuticals Resveratrol B E. Yup. I use one even at night. Probably overdoing it a bit. But, hey, skin is my obsession. I think it’s okay if I go a little crazy with it once in a while.
Moisturizer: Dermalogica Skin Smoothing Cream Again, this light layer of moisture is just to protect and give a little extra water/oil to the skin
Facial Oil: I apply 3-4 drops of Cosmetics 27 Huile 27 just before going to bed. Facial oils can penetrate through water and oil-based moisturizers and this guy gives my skin an extra dose of “food” for the night.
